VIA SALINA

Arrival in Bern. Visit of the historical old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Evening meal and overnight in Bern.

The first part of the circuit, from Zähringen City, Bern, to Laupen, Switzerland, is covered by public transport services. The second part of the circuit combines a visit of the picturesque town of Laupen, Switzerland, over the Sarine River, and the port town of Morat, Switzerland, that in the past, was an important centre for storage and shipment of salt.

Evening meal and overnight in Morat. Train from Bern to Laupen: 30 minutes. Laupen to Morat trek, 3 ½ hours, 14 kilometres, Alt. difference of +100 m / -150 m.

Breakfast in the Hotel. From Morat, the Via Salina follows the former navigation routes on the ‘Lac de Morat’, the ‘Broye’ canal, and the ‘Lac de Neuchâtel’. The longest part of the circuit can be done on foot or by boat. Evening meal and overnight in Neuchâtel. Morat to Praz by boat: 20 minutes. Praz to La Sauge trek: 2 hours, 9 km. Boat trip from La Sauge to Neuchâtel: 35 minutes.

Breakfast at the Hotel.

The boat takes the rambling group to Estavayer-le-Lac, that in the past, was a recognised and rich town for importing salt to the Fribourg Canton. The path continues on to Yverdon-les-Bains, by train and on foot.

Evening meal and overnight in Yverdon-les-Bains.
Boat from Neuchâtel to Estavayer-le-Lac: 1 hour 15 minutes.
Train from Estavayer-le-Lac to Yvonand: 8 minutes.
Trek from Yvonand to Yverdon-les-Bains: 2 hours 45 minutes, 11 km, Alt. difference of +50m / -50m.

Breakfast at the hotel. Yverdon-les-Bains was an important centre for storage and shipment of salt. The Via Salina continues on the footpath once again. The walk up to Vuiteboeuf in Sainte-Croix, goes over a number of paths with ruts, vestiges of the Bernois Salt Routes. Evening meal and overnight in Sainte-Croix. Ramble from Yverdon-les-Bains to Sainte-Croix: 5.5 hours – 17 km – +800m -200m.

Breakfast at the hotel. The Via Salina takes the rambler from Sainte-Croix to Pontarlier, the capital of Absinthe which is also known as “*La Fée Verte” (*The Green Fairy). The prairies and forests mark the border between the Swiss Oberson and the French Les Fourg. Evening meal and overnight in Pontarlier. Ramble from Sainte-Croix to Pontarlier: 5.45 hours – 21 km – Alt. difference + 50m -300m.

Breakfast at the hotel. Salins-les-Bains, France, is accessible by public transport or by car. Following the visit of the underground vaults and the “Musée du Sel”, the path continues onto Port-Lesney along the Loue River, to the Saline Royale in Arc-et-Senans. Evening meal and overnight at the 3*** hotel in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Distance 17 km – Alt. difference +200m – -300m. Journey in private transport from Pontarlier to Salins-les-Bains, about 45 minutes.

Return transfer to Bern by train. The holiday can be lengthened in Besançon, Doubs Department, on request. Journey by French SNCF train from Saline Royale in Arc-et-Senans to Pontarlier, and Swiss CFF train from Pontarlier to Bern.
