Meet at the Arc-et-Senans Saline Royale, France, at the end of the day. Check-in to the 3*** hotel in the heart of the classified UNESCO World Heritage site, and masterpiece of the visionary architect Claude Nicolas LEDOUX. Depending on the season, the clients at the Saline Royale Hotel will have the privilege of taking part in the cultural events that are organised throughout the year at this former salt production site: concerts, Light & Sound shows, Festival des Jardins (Garden Festival). Evening meal and night-time visit to the illuminated Festival des Jardins (Garden Festival), overnight in a 3*** hotel.
Breakfast in the Gardens of the Saline Royale with a superb view over the salt production site. Audio-guided visit of the famous salt manufacturing site, followed by a short transfer to Port-Lesney, France. Departure along the Via Salina for a ramble taking you to Salins-les-Bains. Picnic lunch supplied. The walk follows the former tracing of the brine-duct, called ‘Le Sentier des Gabelous’, that links Salins-les-Bains to Arc-et-Senans. Dinner and overnight in a 3*** Hotel in Salins-les-Bains Spa town.
Ramble from Arc-et-Senans to Saline Royale: 5 ½ hours – 21 km – Alt. difference +200 m -300m.
Breakfast followed by a visit to the Grande Saline in Salins-les-Bains, classified UNESCO World Heritage site. Departure to Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne with picnic lunch supplied. Dinner and overnight in Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne in a 3 Epis Bed & Breakfast.
Ramble from Salins-les-Bains to Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne: 3 hours – 13 km – Atl. difference +200 m -300m.
Breakfast followed by a visit to the Source du Lison (3 to 4 km) when you can discover some of the French Jura natural curios such as ‘Le Creux Billard’, a deep natural circus formation, and ‘La Grotte Sarrazine’, a cavity 50 m deep in a steep wooded cliff-side. Then a visit to the ‘Taillanderie’, a former manufacture of ‘cutting’ tools which is particularly remarkable for the machinery that is still visible. Picnic lunch (supplied). Short transfer to Amondams where the Via Salina tourist route takes you to Ornans, the birthplace of the painter Gustave COURBET. Dinner and overnight in a 3*** hotel in Ornans.
Ramble from Amondans to Ornans 2 ½ hours – 12 km – Alt. difference from 350m to 500m.
Breakfast at the hotel in Ornans. Discover the Franche-Comté Venice, and visit of the Courbet Museum. Ramble along the Vallée de la Loue (Loue River Valley). Picnic lunch supplied. Dinner and overnight in Mouthier-Haute-Pierre in a 3*** hotel.
Ramble from Amondans to Ornans 3 hours – 14 km – Alt. difference from 320m to 400m.
Breakfast followed by a ramble in the Nouailles Gorges taking you to the Source of the Loue River in Ouhans. Transfer to Pontarlier. At the end of the day, after checking-in to you hotel, visit of an Absinthe distillery that used to make Absinthe in the past, and today specialises in the distillery of an aperitif known as ‘Pontarlier Anis’ or ‘Vieux Pont’. Tasting. Dinner and overnight in Pontarlier in a 3*** hotel.
Ramble from Mouthier-Haute-Pierre to Ouhans 2 hours – 8 km – Alt. difference from 400m to 600m.
Breakfast and return by train from Pontarlier to Mouchard where you can pick up your car, or a train transfer. Possibility of extending the holiday by one day to continue your trip towards the border Switzerland (please contact us for further information).
