A vital artery for the Neuchâtel Canton (former République de Berne to a.d. 1798). For centuries, the historical Via Salina salt route was essential for salt imports, very sought after, from Arc-et-Senans and Salins-les-Bains. The transport was done with beasts of burden, carts, and by waterways, over a network of waterways and land routes with the corresponding infrastructure. Over a weekend in the Val-de-Travers (Neuchâtel Canton), you will have the pleasure of discovering the ‘Itinéraire bis’ (Secondary Route) that the salt traders used during periods of heavy rainfall that were quite common in the Neuchâtel Region in the past.
Meet in the heart of Couvet, Val-de-Travers, Neuchâtel Canton. Check-in at the ‘Hotel de l’Aigle’, set in quite surroundings, offering a relaxed family atmosphere where ‘good-living’ (L’art de vivre) is ‘par for the course’. Charming atmosphere and tradition mix to offer a warm hospitality, with tasty seasonal cooking, and personnel available, mostly concerned with your well-being and comfort. The ‘Hotel de l’Aigle’ is the ideal location for heading out to the mountains and vales to discover the Val-de-Travers and the outstanding natural sites, with an breathtaking viewpoint of the Creux-du-Van, the large Swiss Canyon.
Evening meal at the hotel (½ board package).
Breakfast. Option of a guided and commentated ramble to the Poêtta Raisse Gorges, or to the Creux-du-Van. Discovery of the history of salt in the Val-de-Travers, known by the salt traders as ‘Itinéraire bis’ (Secondary Route), and also well-known by smugglers! The programme will be fine-tuned between you and your guide for your utmost pleasure and comfort. You will make your own way to the chosen site, and afterwards you will be free to continue on your own.
Lunch, option of a picnic prepared by the ‘Hotel de l’Aigle’.
Evening meal available (½ board package).
Breakfast. ‘Pass’Temps Val-de-Travers’ day out. The ‘Pass’Temps Val-de-Travers’ travel-card offers free public transport in the Region, including Historical Steam Trains when operational, to discover over 20 open-air and leisure activities. Depending on the season: Maison de l’Absinthe, Féeline rail bobsleigh run, up or down by chairlift, kick-scooter, marked trails ‘Les Roues de l’Areuse’, The Val-de-Travers Steam Museum Depot, swimming pool, cinema, Absinthe plant dryer, ice skating rink, skiing, snow rackets, winter bobsleigh, indoor swimming pool, climbing wall, Spa (sauna, steam-bath, fitness), golf range, Via Ferrata, guided tours of the asphalt mines, bicycles or electric bicycles, chocolate tasting, the Nature Centre in the Creux-du-Van, at the ‘Ferme Robert’.
